The mix in question was Monk’s Dreams by DJ Monk One of Wax Poetics fame. At that time I was resident DJ of the Marisco working along side my long term DJ partner & good mate DJ Delroydiggler. We had both brought a copy of Monk’s Dreams & the Money Study's 45 featuring two Monk One edits that came out around the same time. Monks Dreams is an amazing selection of music that I massively recommend, it's maybe one of the only DJ mix's with no mixing in it but that actually enhances the selection with this style of mix which plays more like an album.

A few weeks on & Joey (DJ Delroydiggler) had booked Monk to come & spin on our then Thursday night at the Marisco. We had seen he was traveling to the UK to play at Frends & Family in Manchester & had called those boys up to see if we could also book him whilst he was over. At that time we had a strong connection with the Machester crew as me & Joey brought alot of records from Fat City & many of the Grand Central Records roster including the label boss Mark Rae had been down to Woolacombe to play the Marisco.

✌︎ Marisco Thursday Night Flyer for July 2002 ☛ Pic of Monk Pulling Me Out Records Behind The Scenes at Turntable Lab On My 1st Trip to New York ✌︎

Myself & Joey where a little bit late picking Monk up from Barnstaple train station and he must of thought where the funk I’m I. How ever we soon got him back to Woolacombe which was popping vibes wise with quite a lot of stuff going on around the village and lots of people out drinking in the sun. After a few drinks and a banging meal at the then Westbeach ( I think Monk had the Monk fish), we did a tour round town to take in the vibes. Buckie from Hunter Surf had the euro Quicksilver girls surf team down doing a mini surf festival / lessions for girls so we spent a couple of hours hanging out with them pre-club & put them all on the guest list for the night.

The Marisco that night was full and the crowd was proper high energy, as I remember it was one of those great Marisco thursday night crowds that we used to get. Only A couple of people in there would have known who the quest DJ was but they where used to that as alot of people came to the club because of it's reputation for good music & not necessarily the name on the bill that quite alot of the time only myself & Joey would have known.

Monk played a blinder and loved it. On the way back to the train station the next day he invited me & Joey to come & visit him in New York and that’s basically how it all started.

The Story Continues With Two Back to Back Trips to New York in Part Two.

In the Pic - Myself, DJ Delroydiggler, Pete Issac & DJ Monk One taken after a Jelly Jazz session a few year later.

The 1st Phunky Puffz / Soupy mix came out In 2012 around the same time the 1st drop of Peace Soup tee's landed.
